Founded in 2016 by Variety, the Children’s Charity and 2016 Chief Barker Pamela Sinclair, the Variety Catherine Awards is setting a new standard for recognising the myriad contributions from women in business and philanthropy while raising awareness and funds for disabled and disadvantaged children throughout the UK.

As proud sponsors of the awards, Singer Capital Markets were delighted to be able to present the Science & Technology Award at this years event, which was won by Kate Burns of Hambro Perks. Kate is the Venture Partner of the Tech Media Division at Hambro Perks, helping to grow UK start-ups and drive sector innovation. She is of of the best-known Internet advertising pioneers in Europe. After early success at Alta Visa and DoubleClick, Kate joined Google as Director, UK, Ireland and Benelux in 2001, notably as Google’s first employee outside the U.S.

Commenting on the importance of diversity and women in the work place, Kate Burns explains:

“There are many different points that we need to address in society, from girls as teenagers identifying female entrepreneurs as something that they want to aspire to, to young mothers that need to look after their children who find it very challenging to go back to work, and then we have a huge gap in the amount of women in their ‘post-children’ years. I would love to see more young women, middle-aged women and women of all ages to walk through the doors with their ideas and give us a chance to invest in them, back them and support them through their ideas.”

Other award winners of the night included former director general of MI5, baroness Eliza Manningham-Buller, who won the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ Award, Charlotte Tilbury MBE, who won the ‘Retail and Fashion’ award, and Anne Boden MBE, CEO and Founder of Starling Bank, who won the ‘Finance and Banking’ award.

Many congratulations to all of the award winners and nominees at this year’s Variety Catherine Awards. It was an honour for Singer Capital Markets to be a part of this event, and to see so many inspirational women recognised for their work, whilst raising funds for an incredibly worthy cause.
